California gold mining regions
Sierra Nevada Foothills, Mother Lode Belt, Mojave Desert, Klamath Mountains
The major gold mining regions of the United States, Canada, Australia, and the other countries in this index, compared on the terms a prospector can act on: how each jurisdiction lets you in, what its permits cost in these guides, when its season runs, and which districts carry the gold.
Location decides almost everything in small-scale gold mining. The same sluice run that pays in South Park gravel washes out in a district where the ground is all claimed, the water is appropriated, or the season is six weeks long. These guides start from that ground truth for each state, province, and region below, then work up to costs — run any of them through the calculator with its own permit and season figures before you commit to a trip.
“Mining-friendly” means different legal things in different places: open federal land in the United States, provincial tenure in Canada, a state licence on Crown land in Australia, a concession in Mexico. The table compares the jurisdictions in this index on that access system and on the lowest permit baseline among each country's guides. It does not rank them, and it does not compare royalties: these guides carry permitting and claim-cost data, not royalty data, so a royalty comparison would be invented rather than sourced.
| Jurisdiction | How access works | Guides | Permits from |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🇺🇸 United States gold mining locations | Federal land first: BLM and National Forest ground open to mineral entry, where hand panning is casual use, layered with state rules and a dense map of existing claims. | 13 | $0 |
| 🇨🇦 Canada gold mining locations | Provincial mineral tenure instead of federal claims: a prospecting licence and claim registration run province by province, for example through Ontario's MLAS. | 5 | $175 |
| 🇲🇽 Mexico gold mining locations | A federal concession system: a mining concession application, surface-rights agreements, and community consultation decide access, not open entry. | 2 | $2000 |
| 🇧🇷 Brazil gold mining locations | Garimpeiro permits and cooperative ground are the legal route in for small-scale mining. | 3 | $500 |
| 🇿🇦 South Africa gold mining locations | Regional permit and access rules for the Mpumalanga panning fields, covered in the guide itself. | 1 | $300 |
| 🇬🇭 Ghana gold mining locations | Small-scale mining is licensed through the Minerals Commission; licensed ground is the legal ground, and unlicensed galamsey work is not. | 1 | $2000 |
| 🇦🇺 Australia gold mining locations | A state licence opens most Crown land: a Miner's Right or fossicking licence, bought state by state, on designated fossicking land and Crown land. | 4 | $0 |
| 🇳🇿 New Zealand gold mining locations | A DOC fossicking permit covers most Otago and West Coast ground: free for New Zealand residents, a small fee for international visitors, under the Crown Minerals Act 1991. | 3 | $0 |
Start with the jurisdiction whose access system fits how you work, then read its regional guides for the district-level rules: the Ontario gold mining guide for MLAS claim registration, the Queensland fossicking guide for licence-only hand-tool ground, and the Wyoming gold mining guide and Colorado gold mining guide for casual use on open federal land.
The regions that carry most of the gold in this index, guide by guide. Each entry names the districts that guide covers, in its own data, so the region list and the guide behind it can never drift apart.

Read the Wyoming guide, including its panning-law FAQ →Colorado and Wyoming answer the two questions prospectors ask first — is panning legal here, and whose ground is it — in the most detail on the site: claim and public-land specifics for the Colorado Mineral Belt, Cache Creek and South Park, and for Wyoming's South Pass district, the Black Hills corner, and the national-park and wilderness boundaries that close ground outright.
Thirteen state guides covering the ground American prospectors actually work: the Colorado Mineral Belt and South Park placers, Wyoming's South Pass district, the California Mother Lode, Alaska's Nome and Fairbanks country, and the desert placers of Arizona and Nevada. The shared pattern is federal land — BLM and National Forest ground where hand panning is casual use — layered with a dense map of existing claims, so every guide leads with land status and the panning rules for that state.

Most “can I pan here?” questions are land questions: open federal ground, an existing claim, a state trust parcel, and a national park boundary can sit on the same creek. Each guide separates them for its state or region.
Permit fees, claim maintenance, fuel, and distance to a buyer vary more by region than by equipment. The permit and season figures in the index above come straight from each guide's own data.
Runoff, snow, and monsoon seasons set the working calendar, and the geology — mineral belt, greenstone, or glacial gravel — sets where the gold concentrates. Both are covered per district, not per country.
Gold buyers, assay services, equipment suppliers, and prospecting clubs are local infrastructure. Each guide names the ones for its ground so a trip can be planned end to end.
