Panning is the oldest recovery method there is, and it is still how most prospectors sample new ground and finish concentrates. A classifier pairs with your pan: shovel material through the mesh first so you only pan the size fraction that actually holds gold.

How to choose pans & classifiers
•Starting out? A prospecting kit bundles a pan, classifier, snuffer bottle, and vials into one purchase.
•Plastic pans are light and easy on the arms; steel pans are heavier but shrug off years of gravel and campfires.
•Bright pan colors make gold easier to see against the material than plain black — green and blue pans are popular for that reason.
•Pan and classifier sizes are matched: a 12-inch screen fits a 12-inch pan, and a 14-inch screen pairs with larger pans. Bigger pans move more material but tire you faster.
